Coroner identifies Upstate man killed in head-on collision

CHEROKEE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) -

The Cherokee County Coroner confirms a Gaffney man has died following a head-on collision on Boiling Springs Highway Monday afternoon.

Troopers say, a driver in a Chevrolet pick-up was traveling North on SC 150 near Windburg Drive when a driver in a Hyundai SUV traveling South on SC 150 went left of center and struck the pick-up head on.

The collision took place at 4:49 p.m.

The driver in the Hyundai SUV was injured, entrapped and had to be mechanically extracted and airlifted to Spartanburg Regional. No word on the extent of the driver's injuries.

Per the coroner, the driver in the Chevrolet pick-up was trapped in the vehicle for a short time and had to be mechanically extracted by EMS and fire crews. He was transported to Mary Black Health System Gaffney where he died in the emergency department at 6:11 p.m.

The victim was identified as Danny Kent Queen, 78 of Gaffney.

An autopsy will be performed Tuesday.

No charges have been filed at this time. The collision is under investigation.
