(Meredith) -- Former ABC anchor Elizabeth Vargas revealed that she was addicted to alcohol in 2014. Now, the veteran journalist is starting a new life chapter with a network all while celebrating sobriety.

Four years after facing "rock bottom", Vargas said she's using her story to help others around the country.

“I was painfully honest about my struggles with anxiety and how I self-medicated with alcohol,” Vargas told People in this week’s issue, on stands Friday. “I felt very alone when I was in the grip of the disease.”

But as difficult as all of it was, Vargas says, “I feel grateful that I could take what was a painful part of my life and make something good out of it.”

She continues to make public appearances and speeches in hope of reducing the stigma surrounding addiction and anxiety.

Vargas’ new series "Cults and Extreme Beliefs" (which focuses on controversial groups including NXIVM and The Family) airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on A&E.

She told People that while she enjoyed working for "20/20", this new series is giving her more freedom with her investigative journalism.

“I love doing live breaking news, but I’ve been doing that for 25 years,” she said, having reported live from disaster zones. “The storytelling we’re doing now [on A&E] involves that in-depth, long-term digging.”
