HARTWELL, GA (FOX Carolina) -

A grandmother in Hart County said she has seen bobcats before, but never like the one she encountered last week.

DeDe Phillips was walking to her truck on June 7 when she heard a neighbor's dog barking and spotted a bobcat by one of her vehicles. She went to take a picture of the bobcat but said she knew something wasn't right when started coming closer.

Suddenly, the bobcat attacked and she was knocked to her knees.

“As he starts towards me, I threw my phone and he went mid-air and just about knocked me down," she said.

Phillips said her father-in-law was a trapper so she remembered bobcats tend to go for the throat of their prey. She grabbed the animal just inches from her neck.

“Between the teeth and claws tearing at me, as you can see, every bit of it as it could," Phillips said.

She held it by the throat until it stopped moving.

After a test by the state health department, officials confirmed the bobcat had rabies.

Now, Phillips is having to undergo rounds of vaccines to protect her from the virus. She has had shots in her thigh, hips and arms. Doctors hope her last treatment will be Friday.

Her granddaughter was home during the attack and she wants to remind those around her to be wary of potentially-dangerous wildlife.

“It could save someone else from going through this," she said.

A Fundly campaign has been set up to raise money for Phillips' medical expenses. Click here to contribute.
