GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville police say they get plenty of calls a week about someone in a mental health crisis. Several of those calls occur after normal business hours, in the middle of the night.

But if person in crisis hasn't committed a crime and doesn't need medical attention, where do officers take these people?

Right now, Captain Stacey Owens with Greenville Police said there is no such spot.

"Officers are trained to ask you, 'How can we help you? What can we do to help you?' If you haven't committed a crime, or if you're not under the state law which you're not wanting to hurt yourself or hurt someone else, the laws very gray," Owens said.

Owens explained that right now, the only place officers can turn to help a person in crisis is the emergency room. He said it leads to overcrowded emergency rooms or jails. Owens added that doctors will prescribe medication, however, there is little follow-through when it comes to emergency rooms.

A building near GHS Memorial, called Greenville Shared Solutions, plans to change that.

"This will be a 24-hour location 7 days a week that we can call and be able to get an evaluation to bring someone to," Owens said.

A person in crisis can stay at the facility up to five days. The facility will have 8 beds for men and 2 for women, as Owens explains there are more calls pertaining to men.

Various Upstate organizations, such as Greenville Mental Health, Favor, the Phoenix Center, NAMI, plenty of others, will work under this one roof to come up with a personalized plan.

"Miracle Hill will be running the  shelter," Owens said. "I really think this will change the way we do things, and outcomes for many lives."

Owens said the building is set to open at the end of summer, or early fall.
