TRYON, NC (FOX Carolina) -

Troopers in North Carolina say excessive speed was the main factor in a collision that killed one person and sent two others to a hospital on Friday.

It happened on Pea Ridge Road in Polk County just north of US 74.

According to the North Carolina Department of Safety, the Lincoln passenger car was speeding when the driver lost control and crashed into a tree on the right shoulder of the roadway.

In an update on Saturday, troopers said all three occupants, including the deceased, were 17-year-old males.

The victim was identified as Markell Lipscomb, 17, of Tryon. The North Carolina Highway Patrol said Lipscomb was a backseat passenger in the car.

According to troopers, speed was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Lipscomb's family also receive friends at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10.

McFarland Funeral Home in Tryon said Lipscomb's funeral will be held Wednesday, July 11 at 11 a.m.at the chapel there, with burial following shortly thereafter at the Good Shepherd Cemetery.

A vigil will be held later Wednesday evening at Polk County High School from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A GoFundMe to help the family with funeral costs has been activated.
