GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Students are preparing to head back to school, and that includes those at Greenville Tech. But some of those students won't have to worry about carrying around heavy textbooks, instead they can go digital and save hundreds, even thousands of dollars in the process

Greenville Tech is doing something new this year-they're switching to digital textbooks for some of their classes. Ray Lambert oversees the bookstore and tells us how much students really can save.

"The savings for one class, we're looking at Biology 210, typically its about a $280 book and the inclusive access program will reduce it down to $110, so it could be a tremendous savings for our students."

Lambert tells me they tested the program this summer with some students. It went well and now they're rolling out the digital inclusive access program this fall.

"It reduces the cost for the traditional textbooks and it allows the students to have all the required course material the first day of class."

Lambert tells us other South Carolina technical colleges are going this route, and he sees digital textbooks as the way of the future.

"I see more colleges going to the inclusive access because it will drastically reduce the cost for their students."

Student Micah Fields says he sees this as a positive change.

"I think it's a good idea, it's very intuitive. It's very convenient for students as well."

Lambert tells us students are automatically enrolled in the digital inclusive access book program when they sign up for a class that's taking part. But they can choose to opt out and buy the book or a loose leaf copy.
