Forecasters said the upstate and mountains could see some of the coldest temperatures of the season on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

FOX Carolina chief meteorologist Kendra Kent said temperatures in the mountains were expected to dip into the upper teens and 20s on Wednesday morning. She said in the upstate overnight lows were expected to drop into the lower and middle 20s.

The average low temperature for Asheville is 35 degrees and in Greenville the average low is 41 degrees.

Even though it will be very cold, Kent said these temperatures should not be record-breaking, but they will be close. The record low for Wednesday in Asheville is 13 degrees set in 1903. In Greenville, the record low is 18 set in 1903.

Experts said with temperatures this cold, residents should make sure any outdoor water pipes are well insulated to prevent them from freezing and possibly bursting. Residents should be sure their pets have warm places to sleep, especially if they stay outside.

On Tuesday morning, parts of the North Carolina mountains saw between a dusting and 3 inches of snow. Some schools were forced to close because of the slick roadways.
