The American Red Cross reopened a shelter on Monday to help those affected by Friday’s tornadoes in Greenwood and Abbeville.

The shelter is located at Grace Community Church at 1611 Woodlawn Road off the Highway 72 bypass, which is between Greenwood and Abbeville.

Officials said that about 30 trained volunteers have provided mobile feeding and have served over 2,000 meals to the residents of Abbeville and Greenwood counties since Saturday night.

“This is a hometown disaster,” said Robert Neal with the American Red Cross. “Only through the gracious donation of the people can we continue to do this or to help those in need.”

Red Cross officials said that two emergency response vehicles have been driving through the affected areas providing lunch and dinner to families trying to clean up their damaged or destroyed homes.

About 50 homes were either damaged or destroyed by Friday’s tornadoes, officials said.

The National Weather Service said a tornado was on the ground for about eight miles and moved through the city of Abbeville with winds of about 120 mph on Friday night.

A slightly weaker tornado was reported near Greenwood on Friday night, the weather service said. They said that tornado had winds of between 100 and 110 mph.

“The winds and stuff were blowing high,” said Jalicia Brooks, a Greenwood resident, who lives next to a house that was hit by a felled tree. “Ice and stuff was blowing against the windows and that big tree right there came out of the roots.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the Red Cross’ disaster relief effort was asked to visit redcross.org or call 800-RED-CROSS.
