Scattered Strong Storms Possible Again
Chances Diminish After Thursday, Forecasters Say

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Forecasters said Thursday that there is a chance of strong storms again, mainly in the southern Upstate. Forecasters said that storms could fire up on Thursday afternoon, but the best chance for severe weather will be near Greenwood, Laurens and Newberry counties.On Monday, a weak tornado touched down near Cross Hill in southern Laurens County. The twister damaged some campers and mobile homes. It also uprooted trees and knocked out power to several residents in the area.On Tuesday, tornado warnings were issued for parts of Abbeville and Greenwood counties, but a twister never touched down.On Wednesday, the western North Carolina mountains got in on the action when a tornado warning was issued for the Asheville-area. No cyclone ever touched down.A few hundred Duke Energy customers were left without electricity on Wednesday night after a strong line of thunderstorms moved through Greenville and Spartanburg counties.Witnesses told FOX Carolina that they saw golf ball-sized hail falling in their yards near Mauldin.George McCarter, a Fountain Inn resident, said lightning struck a tree near his house, knocking branches down onto his home. He said the branches punched a hole in his roof.“It was a terrible explosion,” McCarter said. “The wind was blowing, and, all of the sudden, the lightning struck and shook the house.”McCarter said that he was sitting only feet away from where the branches punctured his roof.Forecasters said that the risk of severe weather diminishes on Friday, and the weekend looks rather calm for Mother’s Day.
