ASHEVILLE, N.C. (FOX Carolina) - The Asheville Police Department said officers charged a mother and grandmother after a young child was found dead on Monday inside a hotel room.

Officers said they responded to the Roadeway Inn and Suites on Crowell Road at around 3:10 p.m. on May 2 for a welfare check. When they got inside the room, officers found a small child lying dead on the floor. Investigators said it appeared that the child was extremely malnourished.

According to officers, the two suspects, 50-year-old Inga Torrence Matthews and 29-year-old Chantarica Nasha Matthews, were still inside the room with the child. They were detained and taken in for questioning. Following an investigation, both women were arrested and charged with the following.

  • First Degree Murder
  • Felony Child Abuse
  • Concealment of Death

Both women were booked into the Buncombe County Detention Center and given no bond on their First Degree Murder charges.
