LIBERTY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - A small plane crashed in the waters off Midway over the weekend.

First responders say the plane crashed in the marshes near the Medway River on Saturday evening.

According to a report from the Federal Aviation Administration, the single engine Beechcraft BE35 crashed near Shellman Bluff after 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

The United States Coast Guard assisted with search and rescue efforts after the pilot declared an emergency. A Coast Guard officer said crews were able to locate the pilot who was waving and standing on top of the sinking plane.

Investigators say the pilot was the only person on board.

A boater that frequents the area said they’re impressed with how well the pilot was able to put the plane down given the circumstances.

The cause of the crash or the name of the pilot have not been released.

The pilot was taken to Hunter Army Airfield without any medical concerns.

The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation.
