GREER, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - FOX Carolina is getting answers about your Upstate road concerns.

West Poinsett Street tops the list of Greenville County roads needing repairs.

Factoring in pavement quality, roughness index and average daily traffic, West Poinsett scored 975 out of 1000 on the South Carolina Department of Transportation’s 2023 Pavement Improvement Program.

The road takes drivers from Wade Hampton Boulevard to downtown Greer.

Just under two miles, the road is riddled with potholes, rough spots and patchy pavement.

“It’s getting worse. The potholes are getting worse. It’s not good for anyone’s car,” longtime Greer resident, Deborah Wright said.

Deborah Wright has lived in Greer all of her life. She said the city still has its small town charm, with a lot more people.

“It’s a little hectic these days. Traffic is a lot more than it ever has been before,” Wright said.

More people means more cars.

From 2017 to 2022, South Carolina Highway Patrol responded to more than 260 accidents here. That’s about one wreck per week.

“You have to take your time. You don’t want to get smacked,” Wright said.

Wright works at the Shoppes off Trade on West Poinsett and frequently battles the traffic and potholes.

“We need to upgrade a lot. If you hit a bump you’re going to swerve a little bit and there’s not enough room to swerve,” Wright said.

According to the SCDOT, more than 12,000 cars hit the one-and-a-half mile stretch from Wade Hampton to North Main Street daily.

“I think that a lot of people try to cut through here as opposed to going on Wade Hampton and it’s not able to handle that type of traffic,” Wright said.

Crews plan to resurface the entire road, from Main Street to Wade Hampton.

SCDOT said the construction dates have not been set, but the work is expected to start in 2024.

This is good news for drivers like Deborah. “It needs repaving really bad! It’s in poor condition.”

We will stay on top of this and continue working to get answers.
