(KTRK/Meredith) – A Texas family is demanding justice after their daughter, a 15-year-old sex trafficking victim, killed herself this week.

Two years ago, Letty Serrano was taken by sex traffickers. She was discovered in a park, having been drugged and raped by several different men.

Her family says she was never the same.

"We got her back damaged," Serrano’s grandmother Cynthia Rivera told KTRK.

On Saturday, Serrano took her own life. Her family told KTRK she couldn’t live with her pain.

The family wants justice – they want the men responsible for assaulting Serrano to be behind bars. They were never caught.

The family also wants to spread awareness about how common sex trafficking of young women is in Houston.

Micah Gamboa said Serrano’s story is very familiar. Gamboa is the executive director of Elijah Rising, an anti-trafficking nonprofit that finds, counsels and rehabilitates sex trafficking victims.

Gamboa said there are 300,000 sex trafficking victims in Texas.

Gamboa said suicide is common among sex trafficking victims. He also said the laws aren’t strong enough, with many of those responsible getting off with a misdemeanor.

All sex trafficking crimes must be felonies. How devastating for the girl's family and community.
