GOODYEAR, Ariz. (KTVK/AP) -- “Empire” actor Bryshere Gray has been arrested in Arizona on accusations of abusing his wife, police said.
Police responded to a Circle K gas station in the Phoenix suburb of Goodyear around 10:15 p.m. on Sunday to assist a woman who needed help.
The woman had flagged someone down near Gray's home, saying her husband assaulted her, police said. The citizen drove the woman to the Circle K and called 911.
When police arrived, they said the woman had visible injuries on her body. She told them Gray also strangled her, and she was taken to a hospital, authorities said.
Gray refused to leave his home when police arrived, so a SWAT team and crisis negotiators were called to help. He was taken into custody around 7 a.m. Monday, roughly nine hours after police responded to the 911 call.
He now faces a number of charges including assault, aggravated assault (strangulation) and disorderly conduct.
Gray, who played Hakeem Lyon on “Empire,” was born in Philadelphia and also raps under the name “Yazz the Greatest.”
“Empire,” which ran for six seasons on Fox, aired its series finale in April.
