Buncombe County Health and Human Services is issuing an advisory to residents about a fuel leak which occurred Sunday.

Officials said petroleum fuel was released from a facility on Lyman Street, which entered the French Broad River. No fish kills have been reported, but an oil sheen can be observed on the water in areas affected by the spill.

Water testing is being conducted at Jean Webb Park, the Floating Boat Ramp on Craven Street, Woodfin Riverside Park and Ledges Whitewater River Park.

Until testing is complete and the water is declared safe, residents are urged to avoid contact with the water around Jean Webb Park to downstream areas as far as Marshall. Pets should also avoid the water.
