Converse College will be opening a satellite location at the University Center in Greenville to offer new degree programs and help address the teacher shortage in South Carolina.
This partnership will make the college the seventh academic member at the center. They will join fellow institutions Anderson University, Clemson University, Furman University, Greenville Technical College, the University of South Carolina, and the University of South Carolina Upstate.
"Our new presence in Greenville will provide convenient access to students in this area and will help to fill Greenville’s workforce development needs,” said Converse President Krista Newkirk.
Converse will start offering its Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Early Childhood Education degree at the University Center in July 2018.
Converse’s MAT will meet the high demand in the greater Greenville area for college graduates wanting a career in teaching.
The 46-hour program is open to students with a bachelor's degree in any field and will provide teaching certification to work with young children in the classroom. It will take just a year to a year-and-a-half to complete, depending on previous education and preparation.
“The program is ideal for people changing careers or returning to the workforce after a break, such as raising children,” said Dr. Lienne Medford, Dean of Graduate Studies at Converse.
South Carolina’s Center for Education Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (CERRA) reported 481 vacant positions in schools statewide at the beginning of the 2016-17 school year, up by 32 vacancies from the previous year.
Just over 19% of all vacancies require the early childhood certification that will be provided by Converse at UCG.
