The coroner said an investigation is underway after the death of a 2-year-old in Anderson County.
The Anderson County Sheriff's Office said they responded to Greenville Memorial Hospital on April 17 regarding an incident of child abuse. The incident resulted in the death of a young child, deputies said.
The coroner said Evelynn "Evie" Leonhardt was pronounced dead on Saturday at 4:51 p.m. after being taken off of life support.
According to the coroner's office, she suffered a traumatic brain injury. The coroner said Wednesday that her cause of death was determined to be cerebral edema/subdural hemorrhage secondary to blunt force trauma. Her manner of death is still pending.
Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride said determining whose care Evie was in at the time of the abuse has been difficult, due to conflicting stories.
"I mean this is extremely important to us and that's why a lot of people are wanting to see charges, you know yesterday, and we understand that because we do too. But we also want to make sure we get it right instead of doing it fast," the sheriff said.
The investigation into the case is ongoing.
A group is raising money to help the family with funeral expenses and legal fees by selling #JusticeForEvie items. Adult size t-shirts are $25 each, youth sizes are $20 each and silicone wristbands are $7. All proceeds will go Evie's father and/or towards funeral expenses for Evie and court fees while Evie's father fights for custody of his two oldest daughters.
Anyone interested in purchasing a #JusticeForEvie item or donating to the fund is asked to email Tabitha Chappell directly at Lainey6189@gmail.com or TEXT (don't call) (404) 844-8853.
