A dashcam video from Easley Police shows what happened during a chase that led to a crash Sunday afternoon.
In video released to FOX Carolina through a Freedom of Information Act request, it shows a Chevy Trailblazer veering in and out of traffic, running multiple red lights, nearly crashing on multiple occasions, before colliding with a truck at the corner of Main Street and Pendleton Street.
Easley Police said the suspect, Christopher Smith, was likely under the influence of drugs when the chase started.
"I felt that he was going to wreck regardless of what he did," said Lt. Chad Harrelson, one of the responding officers. Harrelson said Smith had almost collided with his cruiser at one point, which started the initial chase. "Even if I had not tried to stop him, he would have had a collision with another vehicle."
Body cam footage released to FOX Carolina showed the moments after the crash, which included Sgt. Bryant Gibson rushing to Smith's aid. The video shows Smith's arm pinned between a car door and a tree. Police described him as essentially "dangling" as pressure was being put on his injured arm.
"I took a tire over to him and put it under him so we could take the pressure off that arm," said Bryant.
A SLED background check revealed that Smith is no stranger to authorities in the Upstate. His arrest record goes back nearly 18 years, and includes arrests from Williamston to Greer and at least two stints in prison.
Still, though, police said Gibson has expressed regret over what happened.
"He seems to know what he was doing was wrong," said Gibson. "Even out on scene, he seemed remorseful for the people he hit."
The dashcam footage shows Smith's Chevy Trailblazer colliding with a Ford F-350. Police said two people were inside that vehicle and had minor injuries.
Smith faces charges of DUI 2nd offense, failure to stop for blue lights 2nd offense, and driving under driving under suspension.
