Deputies: Couple arrested for trafficking heroin hid drugs in baby's bassinet

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office said a husband and wife are facing charges in a drug investigation.

As part of Operation Rolling Thunder, deputies were conducting an undercover narcotics operation at a motel off of Winslow Avenue. Deputies said Cornelius Mayberry was taken into custody after being found in possession of two kilograms of methamphetamine.

When they executed a traffic stop for Mayberry's wife, Renata Mayberry, they said she led them on a very short chase. During the traffic stop, deputies seized $68,000 in currency.

A search warrant at a residence on Overbrook Drive led to the seizure of another kilogram of meth, 14 grams or more of heroin and four firearms.

Deputies said some of the drug's were hidden in a child's bassinet.

Cornelius Mayberry is charged with trafficking meth, trafficking heroin and unlawful neglect of a child. Renate Mayberry is charged with trafficking meth, trafficking heroin, unlawful neglect of a child and failure to stop for blue lights.

The couple appeared for bond hearings on Tuesday.
