Spartanburg County deputies say a man was arrested after chasing paramedics with an ax and attempting to steal an ambulance.

The sheriff's office said deputies responded to the 200 block of Gwinn Mill Road Thursday in reference to a barricaded suspect.

According to the incident report, the suspect became angry, grabbed a knife and threatened to harm himself before sticking the knife in his bedroom door.

Deputies said once paramedics arrived on scene, the suspect chased them with an ax. The suspect then rammed a van into the ambulance and attempted to steal it, the sheriff's office said.

One paramedic received an injury to his arm during the incident and was transported to the hospital.

Deputies said 19-year-old Jacob Austin Robertson was charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, grand larceny and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

He is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
