Greenville County deputies said a man was arrested after jumping safely from a sign hanging from the White Horse Road overpass above I-85 South Saturday morning.

Deputies said they were called to the White Horse Road bridge over I-85 around 9:30 a.m.

I-85 South was closed from Augusta Road to I-185. White Horse Road was also closed from Jacobs Road to Bruce Road.

Deputies said SWAT negotiators were called to the scene to try and resolve the situation peacefully.

Around 10:45 a.m. our crew at the scene said a man jumped from the green sign hanging above the interstate onto one of three tractor trailers parked below that to block his fall. The man then slid from the top of a tanker onto the interstate.

Dispatchers confirmed at 10:50 a.m. that the man was in custody.

Deputies said they asked the truck drivers to set up under the bridge in case of a jump.

"At some point during the negotiations, the subject did jump from the I-85 sign that he was laying on, and landed on a truck," Sgt. Ryan Flood stated in an e-mail.

Flood said the man was not hurt and was arrested at the scene. He was charged with public disorderly conduct and pedestrian in the roadway.

All lanes reopened just after 11 a.m.
