Deputies, police seek suspect in vehicle theft, multiple chases in Anderson Co.

Anderson University was placed on a temporary lock down on Saturday after investigators said a subject they were searching for may have been in the area.

The Anderson Police Department was assisting the Anderson County Sheriff's Office with the search.

Officials with Anderson County Sheriff's Office said they received word from Pickens County Sheriff's Office that a stolen vehicle was heading toward Anderson.

When an Anderson County deputy spotted the stolen vehicle and tried to initiate a traffic stop, deputies said the driver refused to stop, continuing south on SC 81 N.

Deputies said the suspect eventually crashed the stolen vehicle into another car on Greenville Street at Bellview Road. The victim in the car hit by the suspect vehicle received minor, non-life threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

Deputies said the suspect then fled on foot, and after seeing a vehicle with the keys still inside, stole it from within the Anderson city limits.

Police and deputies canvassed the area within a five mile radius of Bellview Road, including Anderson University.

The stolen vehicle was found with no suspect inside. Deputies said tracking dogs and a helicopter were used to try tracking the suspect, but were unsuccessful.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Christopher Scott Smith, is still sought at this time.

Pickens County and Anderson County Sheriff's Offices and Anderson City Police Department are all involved in the investigation.
