Deputies said a suspect has been taken into custody after a standoff in Anderson County Sunday evening.

The sheriff's office said a deputy patrolling Prospect Street in Piedmont noticed a vehicle with a stolen tag. Deputies said they spoke with several people at the scene and determined an individual wanted on several outstanding warrants was inside the residence.

According to deputies, the suspect was wanted on armed robbery warrants and probation violations.

The suspect barricaded himself inside the home and SWAT was called in, the sheriff's office said.

Deputies said SWAT tried to negotiate with the suspect for several hours and were unsuccessful. The SWAT team was forced to use tear gas, according to deputies.

The sheriff's office said the suspect did eventually walk out on his own and was taken into custody.

The house was initially occupied with several people, but all walked out except the suspect, deputies said.

Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride identified the suspect as 29-year-old Daniel Bennett.

Bennett is currently being held at the Anderson County Detention Center.

According to detention center records, Bennett is charged with armed robbery with a deadly weapon, receiving stolen goods, failure to stop for blue light, and breaking into auto/tanks where fuel stored.
