Deputies said two women were arrested Tuesday morning for cocaine trafficking off SC Highway 121 at I-26.

The Newberry Sheriff's Office said a deputy was investigating a suspicious vehicle around 5:25 a.m. when he saw two women in the car.

Upon further inspection, the deputy discovered approximately 15 grams of cocaine in the women's possession. The deputy also found a small amount of marijuana and a glass pipe with burned residue.

Brenda Lee Edgins, 38, of Newberry was charged with cocaine trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Carla Fulmer Shealy, 39, of Whitmire was arrested and charged with cocaine trafficking and possession of marijuana.

Deputies credit the arrests to their use of weekly crime maps and knowledge of crime trends within the area.

“This is an outstanding example of knowing the community and current crime trends and applying good police work to that knowledge,” said Sheriff Foster. “I commend the deputies involved in this case for their outstanding work in removing a large amount of drugs from our community.”

Both women are being held in Newberry Detention Center on a $100,000 bond.
