Duke Energy to test sirens near Oconee Nuclear Station Oct. 10

Oconee Nuclear Station (FOX Carolina/ August 8, 2017)

Duke Energy said Wednesday that people living and traveling near the Oconee Nuclear Station will hear sirens Wednesday morning.

Duke said the 65 sirens will sound for three minutes as part of a quarterly maintenance check, beginning at 11:50 a.m.

The outdoor warning sirens around the Oconee Nuclear Station will be tested on Wednesday, Jan. 10,

Hearing a siren does not mean to evacuate, Duke says. In the case of an actual emergency, sirens are sounded as a signal for residents to tune to a local radio or TV station and listen for emergency alert messages.

If people hear a siren and are unsure if there is an emergency, Duke said they should tune to their local radio or TV station.
