Train Derailment

LIBERTY, SC (FOX Carolina)-  On Thursday, the Federal Railroad Administration said it is investigating a train derailment near the town of Norris. 

According to Pickens County Emergency Management, officials were first notified of a derailment at around 1:32 p.m. on Wednesday. The derailment occurred along the Norfolk Southern Railroad. 

Norfolk Southern Railroad released a statement on the incident on Wednesday evening. It said that the train was en route from Charlotte to Memphis, Tennessee. 

Emergency Management says that it is estimated that 13 cars have derailed during the incident. 

Officials say that at this time, Highway 93 is currently closed between Old Norris Rd. at the town of Norris. 

According to a release, none of the derailed cars were labeled as carrying hazardous materials. Norfolk Southern later confirmed this. 

The railroad says that the cause of the derailment is currently under investigation. 

Emergency Management says that firefighters and HAZMAT teams are also investigating this derailment incident.
