Greer, S.C. (FOX Carolina) -- Greenville Spartanburg Airport will be hosting a workshop focused on employing veterans at the end of March, officials released to press.
The workshop is part of Edge4Vets, a national program, and it will include some of the largest employers on the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) campus and the Upstate.
It will be held March 29 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the GSP Conference Center. Registration is required by emailing HR@gspairport.com.
“We are proud to bring Edge4Vets to South Carolina,” said Dave Edwards, GSP’s president and CEO. “This will be a good opportunity for Upstate employers to identify talent while mentoring veterans transitioning into the workforce or those looking for new opportunities.”
Some of the companies participating in the workshop include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, FedEx, United Airlines, the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, airport concessionaires and Clemson University will also be in attendance.
GSP is serving as the pilot airport for the program in South Carolina. Upstate Warrior Solution, a nonprofit supporting veterans across the Upstate, is leading the recruitment of veterans for the initiative.
“Many veterans have valuable skills that are beneficial to employers, but they sometimes have difficulty selling themselves,” said Tom Murphy, Edge4Vets’ founder.
“People serving in the military learn to work as a team and they sometimes don’t think in terms of their individual accomplishments and skillsets. Some also become so accustomed to using the language and lingo used in the military that civilian employers might not understand what they are saying. These slight adjustments can make a difference in a veteran landing a job and getting on a desirable career path.”
The March 29 workshop will help veterans set goals and they will receive access to an online course to help polish their “PLAN4SUCCESS.” The event will also give them a network of contacts that can help with resume writing, interview prep and continued mentoring.
Edge4Vets began in 2011 at Fordham University before expanding across New York City. It started working in collaboration with Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) in 2014 to introduce veterans to airport workforces.
About Edge4Vets Developed by the Human Resiliency Institute at Fordham University in New York, the program works in partnership with Airports Council International – North America as part of its “Workforce of the Future” initiative.
