The town of Lake Lure has declared a state of emergency at this time due to rising water levels in Rocky Broad River and Lake Lure.

Officials said the Rocky Broad River has risen to 9 feet. Flood gates at the dam will stay open until the Rocky Broad river subsides, according to Lake Lure police.

Memorial Highway (Highway 64 / 74A) is closed from Chimney Rock Village to Bat Cave Road after a mudslide wiped out parts of the highway. Police ask drivers to please obey the road closed signs. Driving in this area is prohibited and only emergency vehicles may pass the barricades, police said.

On Wednesday, Duke Energy said more than 500 residents woke up without power, after the Lake Lure area received more than 6 inches of rain and downed trees damaged power lines.183 people on Lake Lure were still without power Thursday morning.

Police said the lake was temporarily closed on Thursday due to debris from the flooding.
