Looking for some extra cash? The state of South Carolina may have some with your name on it. It's called the Palmetto Payback Program.
The state treasurer has millions of dollars that are unclaimed. FOX Carolina checked the Upstate numbers. There are more than 53,000 unclaimed accounts from people, businesses and agencies, totaling more than $7.5 million in Anderson County.
In Greenville County, there are a whopping 206,000 accounts worth nearly $32 million. In Spartanburg County, there are almost 100,000 unclaimed accounts with a value of more than $14 million.
That is a total of $54 million in just three Upstate counties. It sounds more like a lottery jackpot, but it's just some of the unclaimed money available. It turns out people across South Carolina are entitled to a total of $420 million state-wide.
The unclaimed funds could be old bank accounts, stock certificates, checks, insurance policies and utility deposits. It's not just individuals, but even government agencies and businesses that have money coming to them.
State Treasurer Curtis Loftis came to Greenville this week with a check for $13,000. It was made out to the Girl Scouts of South Carolina, Mountains to Midlands. Several scouts gathered for the check presentation outside their Upstate headquarters.
The money was left over from old troop accounts and came to a surprise at the Girl Scout offices. The money will be used to send girls in need to camp and to pay for memberships.
"We have about 1,500 girls a year that we help with memberships, also getting financial assistance so this money will go towards that so this is a windfall for us," Susan Schneider of the Girl Scouts said.
The State Treasurer is encouraging people, businesses and others to check the website for unclaimed money. It is an easy process and the money is held indefinitely until it is claimed.
"$13,000 means a lot when an organization has dues of $15 a year," Loftis said. "There are lots of literally thousands of charities, nonprofits that have money at the state treasurer's office."
The unclaimed money is available at no cost and requires just a few clicks of the mouse on the State Treasurer's website. Here is a link to get started and to find out if you, your business or nonprofit group have money waiting: http://www.treasurer.sc.gov/unclaimed-property/
