The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office said Community Mortuary volunteered to assist and covered the cost of cremation of a woman who was supposed to have been cremated in 2015 but her body was found at a funeral home in February.

The coroner said an investigation began after a complaint was filed by a former employee of the First Family Funeral Home on Chesnee Highway.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said his office and an investigator from the S.C. Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation found an unrecognizable body. The deceased was identified as 63-year-old Mary Alice Pitts Moore.

On Wednesday, Clevenger announced that Community Mortuary, another Spartanburg County funeral business, ensured Moore was properly cremated.

"I want to say thanks to Community for stepping forward and helping the family find closure," Clevenger stated in an e-mail. "During the process, Palmetto Mortuary also called and wanted to do the cremation as well. Although bad things may happen, there are good people and businesses in this community that step forward willing to help."

First Family Funeral's license was temporarily suspended while SLED and the LLR continue to investigate.
