An Upstate mother is asking for prayers after a 17-year-old girl suffered multiple broken bones, fractures, punctured lungs, serious internal bleeding and other injuries after a crash that blocked Danzler Road in Duncan Thursday night.

The crash happened in front of Beech Springs Intermediate School.

Two vehicles were involved.

Mystina Vogel said her daughter Madison Gervasi, a junior at Byrnes High School was driving one of the vehicles.

Troopers said Madison pulled off in a private area in an attempt to make a u-turn and was struck by a truck while re-entering the roadway.

Vogel said her daughter's car hit a tree and caught fire. She was entrapped in the vehicle and the driver of the truck, a family friend and a good samaritan ripped the driver door off with their bare hands to rescue her daughter from the flames.

“She was airlifted to Spartanburg Regional Hospital, arrived with two collapsed and punctured lungs and massive internal bleeding,” Vogel stated on Facebook. “She was intubated, and put on a ventilator, rushed into emergency surgery, where they removed her spleen to resolve the internal bleeding.”

Friday, Vogel said doctors learned that Madison had also suffered a broken clavicle, pelvis and left leg.

Vogel said another child was riding with Madison and was hospitalized with broken bones.

She said the other vehicle was being driven by a family friend. She is asking for prayers for that driver as well.

“The other vehicle happened to be driven by a long time family friend whom we love,” Vogel said on Facebook. “Please pray for him as well that he is not harmed and that he can know that we know he loves Madison very much.”

Madison's step mother Patsy Nichol said a GoFundMe was launched to help the family cover Madison's hospital expenses.

Family members said Madison was in critical but stable condition Friday afternoon. By Monday, they said Madison was showing positive signs and said her first words since the accident.

A fundraising concert will be held at Byrnes High School on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Spartanburg District 5 Fine Arts Building. Madison was an orchestra student at the high school and her teacher said the proceeds from the event would go to benefit her.
