2nd charge added against man in Asheville hit-and-run

Jeffrey Ponder (Asheville Police Dept.)

Police said the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office decided to add a second charge against an Asheville man accused of hitting someone with his car then fleeing.

Asheville police charged 33-year-old Jeffrey Ponder with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He turned himself in on Tuesday and was given a $10,000 bond on the new charge.

Police said Ponder had gotten into a verbal dispute with a man crossing the street with his family, then jumped the curb, hitting the man with his car then fled the scene on Saturday.

Ponder was originally arrested on Monday, charged with felony hit-and-run with serious injury and driving with a revoked license, then released from jail on a $10,500 bond.

The condition of the victim was not immediately released, but police did say he was taken to Mission Hospital for treatment.
