Police: Man claimed he was running naked because snakes were in his clothes, bit him

Greenwood police said a man who officers found running naked early Saturday morning claimed he stripped off his clothes because snakes had bitten him.

According to a Greenwood Police Department Incident report, officers were called to the area of South Main Street and Kirksey Avenue just before 4:30 a.m.

Police said they located the man, later identified as Norman Wightman, 56, running without any clothes on Kirksey Drive near Lyman Avenue.

“Wightman advised that he was naked due to the fact that he had been looking for snakes earlier and there were snakes in his pants,” police sated in the report.” He advised that the snakes began to bite him while he was walking down the roadway. He advised due to the snakes biting, him he began to undress on the side of the road in plain view of motorists.”

Wightman then told police he was running away from the snakes in his pants and was trying to get to a family member’s home on Lyman Avenue when officers stopped him.

Police said Wightman denied taking any alcohol or narcotics but appeared to be under the influence.

Wightman was arrested and asked to go to the hospital. After he was medically cleared, police said Wightman was taken to the Greenwood County Detention Center and charged with indecent exposure.
