Investigators in Due West are investigating a shooting that led to a woman being airlifted and two schools being placed on lockdown.

The Abbeville County Sheriff's Office said deputies are assisting Due West Police Department with the investigation into a shooting. The sheriff said a woman was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

According to Due West Police Chief Maxwell, they received a call regarding shots fired on Johnson Street shortly after 11 a.m. Maxwell said when officers arrived on scene, they found the woman with multiple gunshot wounds.

She was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Maxwell said three male suspects were involved in the shooting. Investigators believe the suspects left the foot on area and then got into a nearby vehicle.

As a precautionary measure, Dixie High School and Cherokee Trail Elementary were placed on a lockdown. Shortly after 2:15 p.m., the lockdowns were lifted.

Family members said early Tuesday that the victim was in stable condition and was scheduled to undergo surgery later in the day.

Maxwell said investigators were still following a number of leads on Tuesday but no arrests have been made.
