A yearly study on shark attacks across the globe revealed surprising numbers for South Carolina in 2017.
The Florida Museum released data from an investigation by the International Shark Attack File (ISAF) into 155 encounters between humans and sharks last year. Of the 155, the ISAF said 88 cases were confirmed to be unprovoked attacks. Thirty of the cases were labeled as provoked.
The U.S. saw 53 of these worldwide provoked attacks in 2017, with Florida once again topping the list of states where attacks occurred. With 31 attacks, Florida's incidents represented 58 percent of the national total.
According to the ISAF, South Carolina ranked second in the country in 2017 for unprovoked shark attacks with 10 confirmed incidents. The annual average for South Carolina is five attacks per year.
Below is a look at the number of confirmed, unprovoked shark attacks throughout SC since 1837 according to ISAF: Horry County - 31 attacks Georgetown County - 8 attacks Charleston County - 34 attacks Colleton County - 2 attacks Beaufort County - 23 attacksHawaii and California also made the list of states with multiple shark attacks last year, behind FL and SC.
