Steven Long is fired up over a debate that could put guns in teachers' hands.

"This is something we can do to make sure our teachers have the ability to defend themselves and defend their students," Long said.

He's also a proud member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), and he's a state representative who represents the Boiling Springs and Inman areas.

"We have legislation that address both K-12 schools, high schools, elementary as well as high education like our colleges and technical universities," Long said.

To promote that legislation, he's firing off a drawing aimed at teachers and school administrators.

"The only thing that's going to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Ninety-eight percent of mass shootings happen in gun-free zones," Long said.

Long is hosting a gun give-away on Facebook. He will give-away three Smith & Wesson Shield 9 millimeters. Two will go to a teacher or an administrator and he will give another gun away as well.

"One to just any freedom-loving patriot who wants to participate in the drawing," Long said.

However, there are concerns about teachers toting guns.

"Living in a great country like the United States of America we have to respect the ideas and opinions of our colleagues," Long said.

State Representative Leola Robinson-Simpson, who represents the Greenville area, says she respectfully disagrees with Long about arming teachers. She's also a former Greenville County School Board member.

"Our teachers are hired to teach in the classroom. We know that many of these teachers have absolutely no training in handling of firearms," Robinson-Simpson said.

She says there should be level-headed discussions that present various ideas.

"We don't want actions that we take- even though it may have had a good intention - to backfire on us to have those repercussions that we later regret," she said.

Long has already shot off his idea and wants teachers armed. He also says winners from the drawing will be able to take Concealed Weapons Permit (CWP) classes at C&C Indoor Range in Boiling Springs.
