One of the most recognizable landmarks in South Carolina is now protected with a security fence. Gaffney’s peach-shaped water tower has recently been fenced-in to deter vandalism, which has reportedly increased over the past year.

Donnie Hardin, General Manager of Gaffney Public Works, says the vandalism was primarily painting and scratching names and initials of the base of the Peachoid.

The chain link fence is about 6-feet tall with barbed wire on top. A sign by the entrance tells visitors the gate is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Hardin says updates are also in store for the picnic area at the base of the Peachoid as well as new landscaping around the property over the next few weeks.

The iconic Peachoid, which was featured in the Netflix series “House of Cards,” has attracted a lot of interest on social media with selfies posted by counltess passersby and celebrities like Keven Spacey and Mario Lopez.
