A Spartanburg woman is facing charges after authorities conducted a welfare check at Norris Ridge Apartments on Feb. 18.

According to the incident report, authorities received an anonymous call about concern over the welfare of a vulnerable adult at the complex on Norris Street.

An officer said when he arrived on scene, the apartment door was open and even outside he could smell the strong odor of urine from inside.

The victim was described as a 94-year-old woman who is blind and suffers from memory problems. According to investigators, the victim's daughter, 58-year-old Malinda Maybank, was her primary caregiver.

Officials said witnesses told them Maybank would leave the victim alone, sometimes even for days at a time, without caring for her.

According to arrest warrants, Maybank left the victim without food, heat, hygiene care or basic protection. The elderly woman was placed in emergency protective custody after being transported to the hospital for medical treatment needed as a result of the neglect, officials said.

Maybank was charged with neglect of a vulnerable adult and simple possession of marijuana. She is currently being held at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
