A retired psychology professor at Wofford College and the owner of a dog that has been called the smartest in the world passed away shortly before his 90th birthday.

Dr. John W. Pilley was recognized for his groundbreaking research in canine cognition and he trained Chaser, a border collie that reportedly knows more than 1,000 words.

He was diagnosed in late April with leukemia and passed away Sunday in Spartanburg.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years.

Memorials in Pilley's honor can be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society.
