Woodruff police have arrested a man who they say was driving under the influence when he struck and killed another driver in April.

On April 13, 91-year-old Minnie Lee Gray died on the scene of a collision near the intersection of Eastbrook Drive and Pearson Street around 11:50 a.m.

On August 27, officers arrested the other driver in the collision, identified as 28-year-old Gamaliel Bennett Otijele of Woodruff.

According to the incident report, officers were able to smell a strong scent of alcohol on Otijele on scene, and initially did not cooperate with officers when they attempted to read him his rights.

He also failed a field sobriety test requiring him to track the finger movements of an officer.

Bystanders also told police they witnessed Otijele throw a liquor bottle from his car. Officers found the half-empty bottle nearby.

Otijele eventually admitted he did drink earlier that morning.

Bond for Otijele was set at $12,500. As of writing, he remains in jail at the Spartanburg County Detention Center.
