Investigators in Philadelphia have ruled out other potential causes of a rowhouse blaze that killed 12 people and are left with the words of “a traumatized 5-year-old child” who said he ignited a Christmas tree while playing with a lighter, the fire commissioner said Tuesday.
The department posted several images of the scene at 333 East 181st Street showing ladders extending into apartment windows as well as a number of broken windows.
Officials have not released the names of the victims.
A late-season wildfire pushed by hurricane-force winds tore through two densely populated Denver suburbs and seemed destined to leave a trail of deaths. Yet, only two people were unaccounted for out of some 35,000 forced from their homes.
Officials warned the numbers could grow as firefighters inspected the rowhome, where they said 26 people had been staying.
A raised firefighting platform is moved close to the roof of the National Assembly building in the parliamentary complex.
Fire officials said that the building is a total loss.
The agency has 161 complaints of engine fires, some of which occurred in vehicles that already have been recalled.
The incident is still under investigation, and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
