Federal officials cracking down on criminals stealing SNAP benefits

Federal law enforcement said they are cracking down on criminals who are stealing SNAP benefits nationwide.

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Federal law enforcement said they are cracking down on criminals who are stealing SNAP benefits nationwide.

Cyber criminals are now able to access SNAP funds for people across the country, including in South Carolina. The money is supposed to help families buy groceries but instead, criminals have been draining accounts.

The operation was one of the largest efforts to stop EBT fraud in the nation’s history and officials said it led to several arrests.

South Carolina’s Department of Social Services offered the following tips for protecting your benefits:

  • Use the connect EBT mobile app.
  • Lock your EBT account until you’re ready to make a purchase.
  • Set alerts on your account.
  • Always keep your EBT pin private and change it often.
