Filing closes for Spartanburg Sheriff special election. Here’s who’s running:

The position is open due to former Sheriff Chuck Wright resigning in May.

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Multiple lawmen have announced that they are running for the position in the upcoming election following the resignation of former sheriff Chuck Wright.

As the list of candidates continues to grow, Governor Henry McMaster appointed Jeffery Stephens as interim sheriff in the meantime.

Here’s a look at the candidates:

Nick Duncan - Filed

Nick Duncan, a candidate for sheriff in the 2024 Republican primaries, announced he is running for election again on Friday.

FOX Carolina reached out to Duncan for a statement.

Multiple sources reached out to FOX Carolina, claiming the former sheriff had a “hit list.” The sources, which included a lawsuit, claimed someone who once worked in the sheriff’s office was fired for supporting Nick Duncan. According to the lawsuit, the former employee was told she was being fired for allegations of “impropriety,” which SLED would have to investigate.

After a months-long investigation, SLED said the allegations against the former employee were unfounded.

Andy Clark - Filed

Andy Clark, who worked in the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office before retiring in January, announced he is also running in the election and gave FOX Carolina the following document.

Randy Hollifield - Filed

Randy Hollifield, who has worked in the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office as part of his career in law enforcement, was the fourth person to announce that he is running in the election for sheriff.

He made the following statement on his website:

Ric Stephens, who has worked in both local and federal law enforcement as part of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office and the Secret Service Task Force, was the fifth person to announce that he is running in the election for sheriff.

Bill Rhyne, a retired state trooper who previously worked in the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, was the sixth person to announce that he is running in the election for sheriff.

Adam Crisp, a former Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office deputy, was the seventh person to announce that he is running in the election for sheriff.

Rusty Clevenger, who has served as the Spartanburg County Coroner since 2009, has decades of experience in law enforcement and investigations.

Robert Cheeks - Filed

Robert Cheeks worked for the Spartanburg Police Department beginning in 2010 before moving to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office in 2016.

Joseph Pilato - Filed

Joseph Pilato filed his paperwork to run for sheriff on June 20. Pilato has served as a law enforcement officer for over 30 years in Texas, Florida and South Carolina. He resigned from the Spartanburg Police Department on June 19 after 14 years of serving the community.

Joseph Hawes, police chief of Pacolet, reached out to FOX Carolina News to confirm he was running for election; however, he did not file by June 21.

Gregg Satterfield - Dropped out

Gregg Satterfield, who served as Duncan police chief and has 20 years of experience in law enforcement, initially announced his campaign for sheriff on June 4. On June 12, he said he has decided to pull his name from the race.
