GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - Changes could be coming to how South Carolina handles certain homicide cases after the tragic death of an Upstate child.

Egypt Henderson was beaten by her father, Joseph Morales, when she was only one year old. The abuse left her with lasting health complications and ultimately claimed her life in 2024 when she was just 10 years old.

Morales was sentenced to 18 years in prison for beating her but he will not serve any time for her death.

According to South Carolina law, a person cannot be prosecuted for a homicide if three years have passed between the time of injury and death of the victim.

A new bill pre-filed in the state house would get rid of that time limit.

This is something Egypt’s mom, Kaya Jackson, has been pushing for. FOX Carolina spoke with Jackson earlier this year about changing the law.

“Egypt will never get justice, but moving forward I plan on getting the whole South Carolina justice,” said Jackson.

The bill was referred to the judiciary committee.
